#PredatorBlitz2017 is the first year of a ten-year pest control strategy aiming to make Kaipatiki Pest Free by 2026. This year, our goal is to establish a baseline for predator populations, grow community action and raise awareness around pest control issues. In future, we hope to secure funding to offer discounted traps to all residents, but for now, our goal is making sure our reserves and halos are rat-free and supporting all the hard-working volunteers in reserves, starting with a handful of well-supported reserves and halos.
Predator Blitz to target rats in November
Rats and other predators are destroying native biodiversity by reducing bird populations, competing for food and damaging the habitat of other species in our reserves and back yards.
^ Rats out of the ceiling, rats out of the garden, rats out of bird nests!
Volunteers can sign up to help local restoration groups get rat traps into reserves - starting with Rangatira Reserve, Shepherds Park and Eskdale Reserve. More volunteers are invited to take part, so more reserves such as the beautiful Stancich, Linley, Holland, Stancich and Powrie Reserve can be included.
Training starts on Saturday October 21 and will cover an introduction to pest control, volunteer and public health and safety. A second training day on October 28 will involve setting up the rat stations in reserves, followed by volunteers setting out the bait and checking traps for a Blitz kick off on the 4th of November. The programme is timed to align with the Auckland Biosecurity November ‘pulse’ or baiting schedule and rat breeding season.
Volunteering is easy - approximately 4 hours over 4 week period between a trapping/baiting team.
We aren't forgetting about the threat Possums pose either - Possum control will start in January. Anyone wishing to hire a possum trap now can contact Kaipatiki Project - email email@example.com or phone 482 1172. The cost is $10 plus $50 bond.
To volunteer for rat trapping in a reserve, before 5pm, Monday Oct 9 - email firstname.lastname@example.org or use this form
If you need more information to sign up, or already have and want to get started - read our Community Info and FAQ sheet for full details of all events, important volunteer info and FAQ's. We hope to see you at one of the first events and thank you for signing up!
Please contact us by emailing email@example.com if you have any further questions...
^ Why are we doing this? One of the many reasons is that fewer introduced predators means more of the unique native wildlife we all love - like these young pīwakawaka (fantail). Photo courtesy of Kathrin&Stefan Marks.

Subsidised rat traps for residents near Reserves
Pest Free Kaipatiki are also excited to announce residents with properties bordering several reserves will be able to take part in the following pilot ‘halos’ from early October.
A halo is formed by properties bordering or close to a reserve and make up an important part of the neighbourhood ecosystem. Not only reserves are valuable, but so too is the habitat found within our backyards and gardens. In terms of rats - the wider a halo the better as this buffers or protects the reserve.
Pest Free Kaipatiki will be offering rat traps at bulk prices for all residents with properties bordering Fern Glen Native Gardens, Muriel Fisher Reserve, Kauri Park and Odin Reserve, as well as a limited number of Goodnature Rat traps within Tuff Crater and Werham Ave.
^ Predator Blitz Pilot reserves. Further reserves and halo's will be supported across Kaipatiki depending on interest from January onward
Pest Free Kaipatiki are initiating these pilots, but they are community led. This is a door to door initiative, designed to encourage participation in predator control across Kaipatiki on a landscape scale, neighbour to neighbour, street to street. Doorknocking will begin in early October and traps will be delivered in the last two weeks on October, in time for the November rat pulse.
Bordering a reserve means nature is right on your back doorstep, but the downside is rats and possums can often invade back gardens - finding a way into your roof, rubbish or compost. Neighbourhoods working together on a coordinated pest control plan can significantly reduce the population.
To volunteer to help coordinate a street within any of the above halos, or put your name down for one in the future please email email@example.com or fill out this form and we will contact you.
If you have already signed up - read our Community Info and FAQ sheet for full details of all events, important volunteer info etc and we hope to see you at one of the first events.
Help us promote the Predator Blitz in your community
A big thanks to Barry Ross Smith for sharing his artwork - one of a series on predators. Barry is a local and was one of our Chew Card volunteers - and as you can see is very passionate about raising awareness and achieving a pest free NZ.
